Substantive Editing

Substantive editing is typically the first stage of editing a project and focuses on the overall quality of the work, including clarity, coherence, organization, readability, flow, and logic. I will suggest language changes as well and organizational changes to improve logic and flow. Jargon, redundancy, and passive voice are also identified with suggested changes.

A substantive edit also provides you with a neutral third party look at whether your project is telling the story you want to convey.

Copy Editing

In contrast to a big picture substantive edit, copy editing focuses on the finer details of the text reviewing grammar, spelling, punctuation, and syntax. Style and term consistency as well as adherence to style guides are also reviewed.

Proofreading

Proofreading is the final stage of reviewing a draft before publishing to check for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and formatting mistakes that were missed in earlier reviews. I also check for adherence to any applicable style guides.

Photo Licensing and Prints

Does your project involve visual communication? I am an avid photographer and have a deep archive of photos that are available for licensing. Contact me for further information and to discuss your needs.

Some of my photos are also available as prints.

Rates & Estimates

My hourly rates generally follow the Editorial Freelancers Association’s guidelines, but can vary depending on the complexity of and deadline for the project as well as the degree of required expertise or experience.

I can provide an estimate of the hours I expect a project to take, if the material is provided for review.

I will consider per page or per word rates for simple projects that do not have tight deadlines.
